The Snorks Story
Snorks? I thought this was a funny colored Smurf! Is this a Smurf? Why is there a pipecleaner on its head?" Well, that may be the first thought that goes into your mind when you see a Snork. And there is good reason to be confused - both Smurfs and Snorks had figurines released in the 1980s, and both Smurfs and Snorks were originally created by Belgians. Plus, Smurfs and Snorks had TV shows on the same network - NBC - broadcast within 30 minutes of each other. So it's easy to see why the two are lumped in with one another. But Smurfs aren't Snorks - they're not even blue! The Snorks are creatures of many colors, including yellow, orange, pink, green and purple. They have snorkels (not pipe cleaners or straws) on their heads, and they live in Snorkland. Oh - and Snorkland is underwater. In fact, the whole Snork universe takes place mostly underwater (except for some occasional dry land exploits). The Snorks story begins in 1643, when they saved the captain of a Royal Navy ship. The Snorks then adopted some human traditions, such as wearing clothes. Snorks use money as well (called "clams", like the old colloquial expression) and have modern technological conveniences. When Snorks are happy, their little snorkels make a "snork" noise. The creation of the Snorks took place in Belgium, created by Nicolas Broca in 1982. SEPP, the animation department at Dupuis, handled the delicate and sometimes difficult licensing of The Smurfs products. SEPP wanted another big success like the Smurfs and so Les Snorky - the Snorks, were born. The Snorks didn't become well known until Hanna Barbera animation created the Snorks TV Show, which ran for four years, from 1984 to 1988. Snork figurines, books and other collectibles followed after the debut of the cartoon, and the Snorks slowly but surely developed a fan base. The Snorks may not have been on TV as long as the Smurfs, but they are just as fun! Snorks Trivia: Starting in Season Three of the cartoon, the Snorks are allowed to leave their underground home for dry land - which they call "outer space". To breathe properly, they even wear little "spacesuit" type helmets, which are clear helmets - filled with water, not oxygen. |
