Strawberry Shortcake is a good little girl who lives in Strawberryland. She has many friends and adventures - there are even some pets, friends and enemies as well! Strawberryland residents each have a special fragrance, based on either a fruit or desert. Strawberry Shortcake character dolls are well-known for the fact that their hair is scented to match the character's name. Strawberry Shortcake smelled like strawberries, of course.
Strawberry Shortcake was created by American Greetings, the same people who made the Care Bears. Strawberry Shortcake began its life as a series of greeting cards and then expanded into other products, including the eponymous line of scented dolls.
Strawberry Shortcake is usually paired with her cat, Custard. Those two, along with 32 other Strawberry Shortcake characters were designed by Muriel Fahrion at American Greetings. Lyn Edwards designed the back stories for the Strawberry Shortcake characters. Over time, Cindy Moyer Patton and Janet Jones took up the design reins for the Strawberry Shortcake world. The very first Shortcake dolls were made by Ms. Fahrion's sister, Susan Trentel.
Strawberry Shortcake was a big hit throughout the 1980s. In 1991, THQ tried to revive the line of Strawberry Shortcake toys but it did not pan out. In 2002, another relaunch happened, this time with more success. In 2006 Playmates Toys took over, and finally in 2009 Hasbro now has the rights to make Strawberry Shortcake toys.
Over time, many amazing Strawberry Shortcake toys and fun stuff have been made, including DVDs, clothes, records, CDs, stickers, videogames and much more. The relaunch of 2009 Strawberry Shortcake under Hasbro shows that the best is yet to come!
