Garfield

GarfieldGarfield is a cat that lives with his master (of sorts) named Jon Arbuckle. Garfield also lives with a dog named Odie. Garfield can be generally described as slothful, lazy, unambitious and greedy. Despite this, Garfield is quite lovable and has a devoted following.

Garfield and friendsGarfield sprang to life across the comic section of North American newspapers in 1978. Created by Jim Davis, the character was inspired with the idea to devise a "good, marketable character" after the failure of his previous work, Gnorm Gnat, which featured bugs as the starring characters. Jim wanted something people could relate to - something like good ol' Garfield!

OdieOver the years, Garfield has changed. Originally on all fours with small squinty slits for eyes, Garfield has evolved over the years to a rounder (but slimmer) upright-walking cat with much bigger eyes.

Garfield is featured on comics, TV shirts, calendars, a TV show, two movies, mugs and lots more. It would be difficult to find an artistic creation with as many goodies available for it as Garfield has. For the collector, this is especially appealing as there will always be something new related to Garfield to collect.

What does the future hold for Garfield? More lasagna, of course! Garfield books and comics continue to be printed and there is no sign it will ever stop - Garfield is popular the world over. Viva la Garfield!

Garfield Trivia: What makes Garfield unique from many other comics printed in newspapers is the fact that the rights to the character reside with Jim Davis' company, Paws, Inc., not the syndicate, Universal Press Syndicate.
