The Rainbow Brite Story

Rainbow Brite is the story of a small orphan girl called Wisp who is taken to a place called the Colorless World. Wisp is determined to locate the "Sphere of Light". During her quest, she meets two new friends: a sprite called Twink and a majestic white horse named Starlite. The Sprites are actually the assistants to the Color Kids (named for each color of the rainbow). Wisp rescues the seven Color Kids and locates a tool called the Color Belt, which will help her colorize the world again. The Color Belt also helps Wisp defeat the the Evil Force (aka the King of Shadows and the Dark One), Wisp is re-christened Rainbow Brite by the same force that brought her to the Colorless World. Rainbow Brite, the Color Kids and the Sprites live in Rainbow Land. Together, they are in charge of all the colors on the entire world!

Color Belt Trivia: The Color Belt needs colored Star Sprinkles to function. Each Color Kid is in charge of his/her unique color, and they get their Sprite helpers to mine Color Crystals from Color Caves. The crystals are then turned into Star Sprinkles by a special "cookie cutter" process.

The History of Rainbow Brite

Rainbow Brite began as a line of Hallmark greeting cards (who also made the Shirt Tales cards) in 1983.

Mattel launched a line of toys based on the characters from the Hallmark cards, and books were released as well. These products proved to be successful so a TV show was created as well, called (naturally) Rainbow Brite.

The animated Rainbow Brite made her debut on June 27, 1984 in the syndicated television show, "Peril in the Pits.". The show rated well and two additional two-part specials were made, called "The Mighty Monstromurk Menace" and "The Beginning of Rainbowland".

Rainbow Brite's next stop was the movies! Our colorful hero must confront an evil princess in the motion picture release "Rainbow Brite and the Star Stealer". The film was released in 1985.

1986 was a big year for Rainbow Brite: in April 1986, eight Rainbow Brite syndicated episodes were created for DiC. The episodes were shown in DiC's syndicated Kideo programming block until 1987.

Also in 1986, a live action direct-to-video feature about nature facts was released, called Rainbow Brite: San Diego Zoo Adventure. The video was narrated by Lucille bliss. This videotape is unique because it features live children and animals, along with costumed Rainbow Brite, Sprite and other friends (Rainbow Brite emoted with her hands a lot like the Power Rangers).
