| Opus the Penguin Opus the Penguin is a talking penguin with a very large nose that wears a bow-tie and collar. Opus is fond of ornate hats and wears them from time to time, along with the occasional pair of tighty-whitey undies. Opus has had a number of careers. He's worked as a newspaper man at the Bloom County Picayune (including an eventful stint in the Personals section), an exotic dancer (although he refused to remove his underwear), been a Vice-Presidential candidate (twice, 1984 and 1988), a legal secretary (assisting Steve Dallas in the Whacker case), drug dealer (transporting illegal Bill the Cat sweat Scalp Tonic), and a heavy metal rock star (as Opus Croakus). Not bad for a flightless waterfowl! Did you know there are Opus collectibles? There are stuffed Opus toys, Opus Christmas Ornaments, Opus t-shirts, Opus coffee Cups - they even made an Opus Telephone! |
| Opus the Comic Strip Opus the comic strip was printed for five years, from 2003 to 2008 in a Sundays only format. Opus is a continuation of Bloom County, and directly followed Breathed's Outland comic. Like Bloom County before it, Opus parodies pop culture, politics, celebrity and modern life. The strip features much of the famous Bloom County cast in new and exciting adventures. Opus the strip ceased publishing in 2008 because Berke Breathed believed that the United States is to face tough times in the future, and he wanted to end the comic on a light note. |
