Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties Movie
Garfield - A Tail of Two Kitties
One wonders, given the title, if the audience is to experience an animated re-telling of Charles Dickens' classic story, A Tale of Two Cities. Will we be treated to a tale of international intrigue? Will Garfield be accused of spying? Will Jon have to sacrifice his life for the greater good? Well heck no! What were you thinking even entertaining the idea? Oh, the title of the movie you say? Well it sounds kind of catchy doesn't it?
Bill Murray is back as Garfield, and Garfield is in England. When one sees a movie that ostensibly takes place in England, one must wonder to oneself, what type of Hollywood England will this be? A) John Goodman's "King Ralph" England, B) Guy Ritchie's criminal underworld England, or C) any movie with Hugh Grant in it's England. If you guessed A) King Ralph style England, you're correct! Indeed, this is "merry old" England, the type of merry old England imagined by Hollywood where they still actually say "merry old England" (does that make sense)? Need more proof? Okay...this movie stars Billy Connolly as the bad guy (and he does a great job of being cartoonishly bad). Jon Arbuckle, played once more by Breckin Meyer, goes to England and Garfield stows away. Jon is in England to propose to Liz (played again by Jennifer Love Hewitt). Kind of a romantic gesture, proposing in England, with its history and whatnot. Anyways, an English cat named Prince, voiced by Tim Curry, has inherited a castle. Sounds legit. Lord Dargis, played by Billy Connolly, wants none of this - he wants the castle turned into condos. In a comic twist, Garfield and Prince trade places (it's like the Parent Trap with cats!). It's up to Garfield to save the day now, and stop Lord Dargis. |
If you're a fan of UK actors, this movie will find you in good sted. The Garfield sequel includes many well-known British actors, including: Lucy Davis (The Office), Jane Horrocks (Bubble from Absolutely Fabulous), Bob Hoskins (who earlier played along side animated characters in Who Framed Roger Rabbit?), Rhys Ifans, Vinnie Jones (Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels) and Roger Rees. They class-up the movie nicely.
This movie is pretty good. It has to be said. Garfield: A Tale of Two Kitties is an even better film than its predecessor, Garfield The Movie, which itself was great. Is this movie going to win an Academy Award? No. This sort of movie is created to keep you laughing, happy, and entertained - and it does a great job. And, upon reflection, it does even have a bit of the Charles Dickens life-swap storyline, rendering the movie's title true. It's a fun movie with some great voice actors and a few choice goofs - plus it has Garfield. So what more could you ask for?
